Xeno-estrogens are a modern man-made toxin that is almost impossible to escape in today’s modern world.

“Xeno” meaning “foreign” is a synthetic form of estrogen that is responsible for disrupting the endocrine system which can lead to breast cancer in women, testicular cancer in men, “man boobs”, reduced fertility, premature onset of puberty in females, thyroid problems and heart disease to name just a few.

Xeno-estrogens mimic estrogen to cause a buildup that causes estrogen dominance which is responsible for depression, anxiety, mood swings, reduced libido, insomnia, foggy thoughts, and chronic fatigue.

Unlike naturally produced hormones, the body finds xenoestrogens difficult to process. Like most toxins, that the body can’t process; they get stored in fat cells where they can build up and cause even greater problems.

Unfortunately, this dangerous toxin flies under the radar – with the general public largely unaware of the health hazards.

Ironically, the American Skin Cancer Society recommends rubbing sunscreen that is filled with xeno-estrogens onto our body which can actually cause cancer. It is mind-boggling that zinc-based sunscreen isn’t recommended as an alternative.

Where is it found?

  • Soft plastics
  • Microwaved plastics
  • Dryer sheets
  • Shampoos, moisturizers, hand creams, skin care products, cosmetic products
  • Artificial food additives
  • Cleaning products (especially antibacterial)
  • Washing machine powder
  • Personal hygiene products

What should I be aware of when looking at labels? (this is by no means an entire list, but a few of the most common you might be able to remember)

  • Parabens (methylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, and ethylparaben, commonly used as preservatives in personal care products)
  • Butylated hydroxyanisole / BHA (food preservative)
  • Sodium lauryl sulphates (found in personal hygiene products)
  • Alkylphenol (used in cleaning agents)
  • Oxybenzone (found in sunscreen)
  • Benzophenone (found in sunscreen)


What’s the best way I can limit my exposure to xeno-estrogens?

  • Never microwave food in plastic containers (even if it says “microwave safe”) and don’t even think about microwaving cling wrap.
  • Try not to drink water from a plastic bottle, but if you must; make sure it hasn’t been exposed to sunlight or heat for a prolonged time.
  • Always use paraben-free cosmetics and personal hygiene products
  • Use zinc-based sunscreen (stay away from regular sunscreen)
  • Say “no thanks” to receipts if you can; cashier receipts contain concentrated levels of BHA
  • Avoid air fresheners
  • If you can’t afford to eat organic; thoroughly wash your fruit and vegetables, or even better peel them.
  • Use a paraben/chemical free clothes washing detergent.
  • To detoxify your body of xeno-estrogens, eat foods rich in curcumin such as turmeric or take a curcumin supplement.
  • Increase your intake of limonene which is an enzyme that detoxifies xeno-estrogens. Limonene is commonly found in citrus fruits.
  • Choose unbleached teabags, toilet paper and sanitary products
  • Avoid Styrofoam cups
  • Avoid artificial sweeteners and MSG
  • Remember that rubbing xeno-estrogens into the skin will bypass the liver meaning you are giving yourself a concentrated dose, so be most wary of non-edible ways this toxin can enter the body.

Until the government does something to restrict this deadly toxin, the only thing you can do is try to minimize your exposure. Although it seems like a tall order to try and avoid this chemical, try to limit the worst offenders.
